How to Take a Screenshot on a Chromebook
An easy way to take a screenshot on a Chromebook. If you’ve just got a Chromebook, you’ve probably noticed that it’s a little different than most laptops. One of these differences is the absence of the Print Screen (PrtSc) button which is mostly found on Windows laptops, whose function is to capture screenshots.

Before you use a Chromebook and take a screenshot using one of these methods, you should familiarize yourself with a special key on the keyboard called Show Windows key.
In some cases, this is referred to as the Overview button or Windows Switcher key, but Google describes it as the Show all windows button in Overview mode.
For this guide, we’ll be using Show Windows. This key is located just above the number row, between the full screen and brightness keys on your keyboard. It looks like a small rectangle followed by two vertical lines on its right side.
There are different key combinations used with the Show Windows key to take full or partial screenshots. The keys referenced in the steps below may appear differently on your Chromebook keyboard depending on the model and manufacturer.
For a full screengrab, press and hold CTRL + Show Windows key. You will see a notification window in the lower right corner of the screen, indicating that the screenshot was successfully taken and has been saved.
To take a screenshot of a specific part or region of your screen, press and hold CTRL+SHIFT+Show Windows key at the same time.
The mouse cursor will change to a temporary crosshair icon so click and drag to highlight the area you want to capture. Once you’ve selected it, release the trackpad to capture a screenshot.
Again, a notification window will appear in the lower right corner of your screen indicating the process was successful and the screenshot has been saved.

If your Chromebook is a two-in-one with a 360-degree hinge, you can take screenshots in tablet mode using the power and volume down buttons, just like you would on an Android smartphone or tablet.
The keyboard is usually not active in tablet mode, so the Show Windows method and the CTRL key won’t work. To take a screenshot in tablet mode, press and hold the power and volume down buttons at the same time, and it will capture an image of the entire screen.
If you want a partial screenshot, you’ll have to crop the full screenshot you just took, and save it. There is no option to capture a specific region of your screen in tablet mode.

You can connect an external keyboard to your Chromebook, or use a Chrome-supported Desktop (Chromebox) and use it to take screenshots.
External keyboards don’t have to use Chrome’s dedicated row of keys, but their function keys do the same job. For example, the F5 key acts as the Show Windows key on the standard function keyboard, in which case you would use the command CTRL + F5 to take a full screenshot and CTRL + SHIFT + F5 to take a partial screenshot.
